Alexandra Nitschke is an exhibition-maker, cultural producer, and researcher interested in contemporary art, collection development, and curatorial projects.
Alexandra is a current research candidate at the University of Adelaide. Her research considers the Contemporary Arts Organisations Australia (CAOA) association, and the landscape and conditions in which it has operated. Research for this project is undertaken with involvement from Professor Catherine Speck (University of Adelaide) and Associate Professor Catherine De Lorenzo (University of NSW & Monash University) and is supported by an Australian Government Research Training Scholarship.
Most recently Alexandra was Curator at Rockhampton Art Gallery. Within this role Alexandra led the conceptualisation, development, and delivery of onsite and offsite exhibitions and participatory experiences. In addition, Alexandra managed and expanded the documentation, preservation, research, and growth of Rockhampton Art Gallery’s significant collection. In 2017 Alexandra assisted in producing the annual Rockhampton River Festival’s Arts Program.
Preceding this, Alexandra participated in an international curators research residency in Vienna, culminating in an exhibition presented in partnership with the Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien [University of Applied Arts]. In 2016 Alexandra completed the Masters programme at the University of Leicester; the world leader in Museum Studies. Her research explored contemporary engagements with museum collections and was undertaken with involvement from the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford, Carriageworks, Salamanca Arts Centre, Dr Sarah Thomas (University of London), and contemporary artists Christian Thompson, Karla Dickens, and James Newitt. Between 2011-2015 Alexandra was Curatorial Assistant at the Ipswich Art Gallery.
Past curatorial projects include ‘Collection Intervention’ (2018), ‘Alluvia by Tom Borgas: The Rockhampton riverside art project’ (2017), ‘Microcosms: The art of Peter Madden’ (2015), ‘I moved on until I went back’ (2015), ‘Gwyn Hanssen Pigott: Works from the Collection’ (2014), and ‘Contemporary Artists: Pictures of Ipswich’ (2012), among others. In 2017 Alexandra was coordinating curator of ‘Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast’, an exhibition produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography (FEP), Switzerland.
